CG ROOT CAMP FAQ
* What is Root Camp?
- Common Ground Root Camp 2018 is a three-week summer intensive where students get to learn from past and present members of Common Ground! At the end, dancers will have a sense of what Common Ground is all about, as well as learn what it means to be a valuable member of the dance community.
- “Common Ground Root Camp is devoted to inspiring growth within its dancers as well as providing values on what it means to be rooted: not only in Common Ground, but in the ever-growing dance community.”
* How much is it and what do I get out of it?
- During our Pre-Registration period (June 17 - June 30), each Track is $30. Open Registration (July 1 – July 11) increases to $35.
- You will receive access to three collab workshops taught by Underground alumni, current Common Ground members, OG (Common Ground Alumni), as well as many other talented choreographers in the socal dance community.
* What’s the Showcase?
- The Root Camp Showcase is a free event where all the campers come together and perform in front of their friends and family. Each Track will perform a three-set medley that will be put together during the camp rehearsals. The Showcase will also be featuring performances by UCI dance crews, projects, and special guests.
* Do I have to perform in the Showcase?
- The Showcase is completely optional, but a part of the Root Camp experience. We genuinely would like you to do it, but we will always respect your decision. Please let your Leaders know that you are not going to participate in the Showcase event so you will not be mistakenly blocked into the piece.
* Can I drop-in for a class?
- We offer same-day drop-ins for each class for $10! Just check-in at the registration table at 5:00PM!
* If I already paid for a Track, but want to drop-in for a class in another Track, do I have to pay?
- If you already registered for a Track but want to take another class from another Track, you will have to pay the drop-in fee of $10.
* If I drop-in can I still perform?
- If you are a drop-in for any class and choose to get blocked in, you have the opportunity to perform. The only requirement is that you purchase the Root Camp Shirt that will be the uniform during the Showcase!
* How much is the CG Root Camp 2017 shirt?
- If you did not purchase a Track, which comes with a CG Root Camp Shirt, you may order a shirt by Friday, July 14. We will be selling shirts afterwards while supplies last.
* If I purchased more than one Track, do I get more shirts?
- No, each camper will be given one shirt, no matter how many Tracks they purchased. Unless they purchase another shirt separately, one shirt per camper.
* Something came up and I can’t make my Track. Can I return, transfer or exchange?
- If you already purchase a Track(s), you cannot return it for money. You also cannot transfer your purchased Track to another person. You can, however, exchange it for another Track to fit your schedule.
* Where are rehearsals?
- Unless otherwise stated, rehearsals from July 8 – July 25 will be at UCI Social Science Plaza. Dress rehearsals and the Showcase will be at UCI Humanities. If you need help locating these places, please contact a CG member!
* Where do I park for rehearsals?
- Between July 8 – July 25, it is advised that you park at Jack in the Box at the University Town Center and walk over to UCI Social Science Plaza. (University Center, 4289 Campus Dr., Irvine, CA 92612). You may also purchase parking in the Social Science Parking Structure.
- However, due to recent UTC changes with the parking lots, be weary of any parking enforcement officials!
- Maps will be provided on the Facebook event page.
* What is “Dress Rehearsal?”
- Dress Rehearsals is on Friday, July 27, and is saved for Tracks to finish and tie-up loose ends for their sets. Reviewing, learning transitions, re-blocking, cleaning, etc. will all happen during this day to make campers feel more comfortable for their big day on Saturday, July 28th. The schedule for this will be communicated to you during your Tracks.
* What happens during practice?
- 5:00PM – Register and check-in. Present your ID and pick up your name tag.
- 5:30PM – Learn the piece, cast/block.
- Rehearsals will typically end around 9 pm (with blocking) at the latest, so please plan accordingly.
* I forgot to put a referral name on the BigCartel check out page. Can I still refer a CG member?
- If you checked out of BigCartel without putting a name on the Notes section of the page, you can contact Ariana Avina via Facebook messenger, text (209.402.1827), or email at [email protected]. The latest you can refer CG members is Saturday, July 7 at 11:59pm.
* Can Drop-Ins count as a referral?
- Yes, if the CG member you are referring genuinely referred you to the camp, present their name upon check-in. You cannot add their name once class has started.
* When do I receive my shirt and what’s it for?
- You will receive your shirts during Dress Rehearsals. You are to use these shirts for the Showcase on July 28th.
* What is our uniform for the Showcase?
- The shirt provided to you and any bottoms your Track has discussed together.
* What is a CG Mentor and where do I get one?
-CG Mentors are an optional feature for CG Root Camp to enhance the experience of the camper. CG Mentors are current CG members that will be in your Track and will help you throughout your journey this summer. They will be there to help you with choreography and answer any questions you have about CG and the Root Camp. You can sign up for a mentor during the first day of your track and you will be assigned one that evening.
